3 January non-Earth directed CME from AR beyond east limb

A coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred from just beyond the east limb on 3 January, 2023. This CME appeared to be associated with a C3 flare at 03/0646 UTC. The flare was observed in GOES SUVI imagery and appeared to emanate from an active region (AR) just beyond the east limb. NSO/GONGĀ helioseismology data indicated a likely AR about one day or so from rotating onto the visible solar disk. Since CMEs can expand considerably during their interplanetary transit, this CME was analyzed closely and modeled. Results indicated a passage most likely to be behind Earth's orbit on 6 January.
